Dept of Special Education

The Department of Special Education for St. Mary’s County Public Schools exists to assist all individuals with disabilities from birth to age 21 in obtaining a Free and Appropriate Public Education, as required by Federal and state law. DSE provides services at every SMCPS school, and works with state and local agencies as necessary to meet the needs of our students.  While most students with disabilities can be served in the general education setting, and are required to be served in the least restrictive environment possible that will accommodate their needs, SMCPS also provides a variety of services for children requiring a more individualized experience.

The website provides a list for the Special Education Supervisors and the schools they are assigned to, the programs and services administered by DSE.  The link for DSE at the SMCPS website is here:  http://www.smcps.org/se

The new Director of Special Education (effective July 1, 2016) is Susan Fowler.  She can be contacted at 301-475-5511 ext 32220 or at sefowler@smcps.org

Parents of young children who are of the age to enter school, or who are not yet of preschool age but still may require services, should contact Debbie Crosby, Coordinator of Special Education, who oversees the Child Find Program. The Child Find program is responsible for locating, identifying, and evaluating children who are potentially in need of special education services.
